Photo Vintage Effect
I have a lot of works to do. But, I just don’t feel like doing it and I’m not in the mood. So, to fill in the gap tonight, I introduce you my first tutorial ever. Well, it’s not really my ideas, I learnt this from somewhere on the net.
Click on the images to get a better and larger view.
So, let’s get started. We are about to apply an effect called vintage effect. To start, I’m going to use this image as my reference in this tutorial. It’s not a good image for this effect though. But sorry I can’t (and lazy) find a better image in my PC. You should find your own image for this tutorial.
This is the original image:
Open up the image in Adobe Photoshop on your PC.
On the layers panel, double click the image thumbnail to make it an editable layer. Then click OK.
Still on the layers panel, click on Create new adjustment layer button and choose Brightness / Contrast. Adjustment panel will open up. Set the contrast to around +20.
Since I’m using CS4, the interface might be different if you are using other version of Photoshop. Don’t panic. As long as you do as I said, you won’t get lost in the way. :). Now, jump out of the window! Just kidding.
Again, click on Create new adjustment layer and select Hue/Saturation. Set the saturation value around +20 also.
Now we are going to adjust the ‘curve’. Most effects require editing the curve for a better look. This may be a bit advanced for you but just try to cope with it.
Alright, so click on Create a new adjustment layer and this time, choose Curves. Choose Red for the channel.
Click on the graph and make it looks just like above.
Now choose Green channel and make the graph looks like above.
Do the same thing for Blue channel.
Now my image looks like above. I told you this is not a good image. Can you see why? I’ve lost my sky. Huhu. But no worry, I’ll fix it later.
Now it’s time to colorize your image so it would look like an old vintage photo. Create a new adjustment layer and choose Hue/Saturation. Make sure you check on Colorize. Set the value as shown above.
Set the Opacity of the new adjustment layer to 50%.
Create a new adjustment layer, choose Solid Color and pick a very bright and hot pink. Then set the Opacity for this layer to 5%.
Well that’s it. You may continue and add vignette to the photo. Making it looks better. I love vignette. Vignette is a very week black border around an image.
Select the layer that contains the image. Go to Filters menu and select Convert for Smart Filter. Just click OK for any prompt.
Now go to Filters menu and select Distort > Lens Correction. Under the Vignette options, set the amount to -100 and midpoint to +50. Click OK.
Double click on the slider icon as shown with cursor above. An option box for adjusting the blending option of the effect will appear. Set the Opacity to 70%.
Your final Layers panel should looks like above.
That’s all!!!
Here’s the final image. I’ve fixed the sky:
Now post your photo on Facebook or make it your wallpaper.
Got anything to add or ask? Feel free to leave a comment. I’ll reply as soon as possible.
Hope you like this. Have fun and good luck!
